No Impact Man

No Impact Man is a funny, inspiring film about Colin Beavan, a liberal schlub who got tired of listening to himself complain about the world without ever actually doing anything about it.  In November, 2006, Beavan launched a year-long project in which he, his wife, his two-year-old daughter and his four-year-old dog went off the grid and attempted to live in the middle of New York City with as little environmental impact as possible.  The No Impact project has been a successful and entertaining blog and is now a film too.

Recently released on DVD, No Impact Man follows Colin and his family (his wife is one of the film’s producers) on their journey to get and stay off the grid in New York City without killing each other.  Can you imagine never taking an elevator, washing your clothes in the bathtub, and not owning a phone?  Yeah.  Crazy stuff.  This film made us laugh, made us feel frustrated, and reminded us of so many more small ways we can make a difference each day.  Check it out!  We think you’ll love this movie.

This movie was awesome. After I was done watching it, I had to ask myself “What DID people use before toilet paper?” So I called my Grandma. She said any paper, really, but the Sears book was the best until it was printed on glossy paper. I got a farmer’s almanac the other day, which still has a hole in it. People used the hole to hang it in the outhouse back in the day. I do think though that the towel lid on the pot in a pot thing is to blame for it not working. My husband and I are going to try one, but with a solid, insulated lid, just for the fun of it. Wish us luck. And watch this movie if you haven’t.

Movie was extremely inspiring. I recommend this movie and hope that everybody gets a chance to watch the movie. I found out about this movie on this site and watched the movie because of Meghan’s comment and I hope my comment will motivate someone else to do the same.
