August’s Product of the Month: TerraCycle Tropical Plant Food

TerraCycle Tropical Plant Food

There are two types of people in this world: those who have (and love!) beautiful plants in their homes, and those who just haven’t learned yet that it’s easy to have beautiful plants. Plant lovers, please never forget to tell those wonderful plant-less people that perhaps you were once like them (maybe you even killed that first plant your mother swore was immortal when she gifted it to you during your first year of university?). And plant-less people, it’s okay to be slightly timid. We know your green heart is just looking out for number one (and by number one, we mean the plant). We’re here to tell you that it’s this simple: if you can learn to take the recycling out each week, you can learn to grow beautiful plants.

That said, there are a lot of great ways to keep your plants alive and beautiful. This month’s Product of the Month, TerraCycle Tropical Plant Food, is a real winner because - get excited - it’s made with worm poop! Yes, worm poop is actually rich in nitrate nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which means it’s a natural fertilizer, making your plant strong and healthy without you doing any of the wormy work. The earthworm’s digestive system naturally treats the topsoil, providing it with all sorts of organic goodies from insects to leaves. And if that’s not enough to get you skedaddling for the scat, the brilliant people at TerraCycle package all of their large selection of fertilizing products in recycled 2-liter, 1-liter and 20oz soda bottles. In fact, you can even contribute to the cause by joining their Bottle Brigade program, which pays your favorite charity for your bottle collecting activities. Now that’s something you can really feel great about.

My 5 1/2 year old daughter and I love this product!!! We love that it is GREEN, comes in a recycled soda bottle, and is liquified worm poo! Also…each one of these products, while on the shelf, had a small card attached to it with a rubber band; ours said “Denise, from Rhode Island” had donated the bottle. SO…we said a little prayer for Denise and thanked God that she donated aforementioned bottle instead of adding to a landfill.
To put the Terracycle to good use, we spritzed it liberally on our vegetable seedlings after being planted in organic soil. My daughter was very excited about watering and spraying with worm poo. Not only were we growing new plants & making new memories, we were helping the environment and laughing a lot about worm poop.
By the way, kudos on this site, you girls are doing a fabulous job!

That is way too funny. My mother actually DID give me an “immortal” plant last year which was my first year of university. Sadly, it passed. Just as you predicted. I will definitely have to get this product and give it another shot. Otherwise I will just have to stick to my vases filled with rocks…
